Sierra at 17 weeks old

This young puppy is out of one of our most recent litters, the Flowers litter , Pixel by Duncan. Her litter name was Buttercup. She is staying with us for several weeks why her owners are out of the country. Doing some foundational bird work during her stay here at PRL. This is a typical Pixel by Duncan puppy developing wonderfully by four months of age. This is Sierra’s fourth time now in the training field with pigeons.

THE CRITTERS LITTER IS ONE WEEK OLD TODAY!

Here is The Critter Litter, Omiimii by Duncan. Born 2/18/17. Ready to go 4/15/17. Details on the AVAILABLE PUPPIES page. Top left, are the three belton boys. I think they will be orange beltons. Their ticking is just starting to come in on their faces. Top right, are the two boys with patch markings. One has an orange patch behind right eye. One has black patch on right eye. Unable to tell if black patch will be black and white or tri color yet. Bottom left, are the three girls. The best I can tell looks like two blue (black) beltons and a black (patch) and white. Bottom right, is Duncan top, Omiimii bottom.

Omiimii will be having her pups sometime this week!

We are very excited to have Omiimii pups on the way! She’s one of PRL’s very best. This is a repeat breeding out of Omi and Duncan. Here’s a photo of her from this morning when it was temperature taking time. This dog is as great of a hunter as she is cute! Also a video of her belly, where you can see some pups moving in there! Life with the Llews in the UP

Hello Everyone!   I can’t believe we have been here a week already!! It’s rained everyday but one day since we’ve arrived but that hasn’t stopped us from getting out and hunting every day for at least several hours. Many of our hunts have been incredibly exciting!! I could sit here for hours and hours just writing about all the great play by play bird/dog action from the past week!!! But I don’t want to bore you to death especially given that I really don’t have access to upload photos of the dogs on point (haven’t taken any yet really due to the weather). The grouse are so crafty it’s ridiculous!! Certainly anyone that spends time with them will understand why they are dubbed The King of the decidous forest. Always fleeing before we arrived at them, running safe distances before flight, hiding in their bunker until you immediately pass, roosting in a nearby tree and take off careening in the other direction, sneaking to the other side of the hemlock then taking off…. and my favorite though I’m hoping they are not this smart…. getting back near the house flushing a grouse and it flying directly over my 500 gallon propane tank. So much for throwing Kyle a bone!! But in all seriousness— it’s been a blast!! My llews are in heaven and watching them work the grouse and woodcock is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Warms my heart, brings tears to my eyes and gets my adrenal going all at the same time. All the dogs improve with each hunt this early in the season and the transformation is always amazing to watch. My old girl Rogue is in her 11th hunt season (2nd in the UP) she a superstar even at her respected age. I only hunt her every third day or so and only have 1-2 hours. She runs as hard as my two year olds. For any of you Toby Keith (country singer) fans, there’s a song that has the main line goes—”I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was….” well that’s Rogue’s theme song these days and we spread her hunts out for that reason. Love my old girl!! Then there’s the trio!!— My three kids that all grew up together and are around two years old in their second hunt season. Last year I was super impressed with these young kids on grouse and woodcock. This year they are proving to be the dogs that I’ll be proud to call my foundation stock. Once the leaves are off the trees here hopefully we will get more shots at these feathered crouch rockets!!! Duncan’s drive, intensity yet cautiousness—Widget’s wicked crazy smart intelligence to figure everything out before the grouse does pointing nearly every grouse before it gets a jump—and my Pixel—my primal girl as I call her… she’s no nonsense, find those darn birds one by one and move onto the next. Then there’s Omiimii… my little devil child that I spoil rotten!!! WOW!! She doesn’t like when dad goes hunting without her!!! I have been taking her every single day on at least one hunt since this is her first season. I call her my ninja! She slices thru the woods in a sneaky way to frequently check the scent in the air from a stand still then selects her next route. She’s incredible on woodcock and has over a dozen grouse points in her first week of the hunting season. I love this 30 pound little bundle of crazy happy energy. lastly there are the two newest additions that I’ll take out in the woods in another week or two— Jolene and Eli. They are having a great time racing around the house and the yard and playing with everyone between my hunts. They are 4 mouths and one week old as of now. I usually don’t start bird work until around 6-7 months old with the llews but certainly since we are in the UP in October I gotta take them out a bit. So just giving them every little chance I can to get a little bigger and wiser. But their bird fun is soon to start too!! Ok well it’s 8am here and it’s time to suit up and get out and find some birds with the kids!! Have a happy and safe day out in the woods wherever you are!!

Pre-season training for our Llews

We haven’t gotten in as much as pre-season bird training as we would have liked due to working so much to enable our time away in the UP for 5 weeks but all the Llews are seeing birds at least once a week and receiving conditioning 3-4 days a week. After our first week in the UP I think we’ll be look’n pretty darn good! Here are a few pre-season photos our Llewellins doing their bird dog thang in the Catskills of NY. Enjoy!

Omiimii makes her point

If you are truly a bird dog lover then you know after one week of doing 10-30 minutes bird workouts in the training fields after work with your 7.5 month old pup and you are getting the following response — then you know I’m going to sleep every night with a smile on my face. After a week in the grouse woods this dog is going to be bringing me to tears with such joy.

Omiimii starts her bird work

Today is the third time in the past week I have had Omi out in the training fields on birds. She is one smart little Llew!! The first time out she curiously found the birds and watched them fly away. The second time out she pointed her two birds without much flare and then today she really came alive on her points and at the same time was amazingly cautious once she got into scent. Here are a few photos of her hunting and pointing. Omiimii turned 7 months last week. I haven’t owned a Llewellin yet that hasn’t completely understood the game and don’t it well after just a few times out. This pup will get her instincts tested in a big way in just a couple fast months away.

A week with Omiimii

Well our newest addition has been with us for over a week now and she’s been a bundle of fun!! She is certainly full of herself and slid right into sync with the rest of the pack. She’s been going to work with me every day, learning the ropes and a lot of hang time. Here’s a photo of her sleeping with the pack in bed while we all get cozy during watching the Olympics.

It’s not easy NOT keeping a pup from your own litters specially when the breeder is incredibly pleased with how they all turned out— which certainly was the case for me with the most recent litters in The Cameras and The Gizmos. Duncan’s new little girlfriend is darling and we are enjoying her first moments here very, very much. She’s been hanging out with all the adult Llews today….. what a riot this little pip-squeak is!!

Paint River’s Omiimii (Omi) makes her first appearance

I just came off of a long weekend out in the U.P.— checked on the property and the house….wow!! All the snow!! There was about three feet on the ground at my place!! Farther north they have “a lot” more so I’m told….. it’s been a rough winter out there with windchills 20-45 below zero for many days this winter. But you can’t slow down them Yoopers!! They are snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowtubing and just have a great ole time out there…. I love it!! I did a lot of snowshoeing on the property. Saw some wolf tracks twice and a billion snowshoe hare tracks. The grouse are around but buried in the snow only to come out to bud on the aspen for an hour a day or so…..

The BIG news is Paint River has added their next future hopeful to the club!!— Paint River’s Omiimii. The native american tribe in the U.P. are the Ojibwe. This pup’s litter name was Dove. In the Ojibwe language the word dove is— omiimii, pronounced O—Me—Me. Her nickname is Omi for short. She’s a little pistol and has all the traits that we look for in a pup. We look forward to sharing her development with you. Here are some photos of her this morning back in NY.
